“The soldier is the Army. No army is better than its soldiers. The Soldier is also a citizen. In fact, the highest obligation and privilege of citizenship is that of bearing arms for one’s country”

2nd Armored DivisionBrigido Gonzalez was part of the 2nd Armored Division, specifically in the 67th armored regiment. Although he did not make it onto the beach, his division went on to accomplish great deeds throughout the war. The map to the right shows the journey of the division throughout Europe, and explains some of the more important battles and missions that were accomplished along the way.

TrainingThe Division was formed at Fort Benning, Georgia, it was first commanded by Major General Charles L. Scott, but after he was transferred, command shifted to George S. Patton. General Patton was quite controversial, especially during his speeches, which were filled with profanity. His eccentricity also gave him a reputation, but he was best known for his energy and leadership abilities.

The pictures to the left are of Fort Knox and the training exercises that happened there. Brigido must have participated in these and when I look at these pictures, I can see him there in my mind and think about how he must have felt. Being so far from home must have been difficult, along with the threat of departing to war, the amount of stress must have been unimaginable. However, Brig was fighting for something better. He was not only fighting for his family, or his country, he was fighting for freedom. Such an vital aspect for humanity must be preserved, and Brig did just that.
